There are many instances in life when you might want to help others feel more confident. For instance, if you find yourself in a leadership role at work or in your family, you might want those following in your footsteps to feel inspired and confident. You may see people around you who are struggling with their self-confidence and find that you wish to help them aspire to more. There are many instances when inspiring self-confidence is a worthy goal, and when you are able to do so, you’ll start to see the people around you excelling.
How can you inspire confidence? Jonette Dyer, life coach, believes there are specific steps you can take to build someone’s self-confidence and make a difference in their life. These are:
When communicating with the people you want to inspire, try to stay positive. The more positive you can be in your demeanor, tone of voice, and suggestions, the better motivated others will be to make the necessary changes. You can even take a postie stance when you’re encouraging them to fix a behavior that’s not working for your organization. Framing criticism in a positive light, and stating that you’re confident they can make the necessary changes, will inspire better confidence than a highly critical spirit.
Most people want to be heard. Even if you don’t have the answers to their concerns, if they know you’re listening, it will inspire them to speak more confidently. Active listening is a key to this.
Active listening involves asking questions and then listening to and responding to the responses to those questions. It shows that you are interested in and value what the other person has to say, and that will inspire confidence.
People need clear guidance if they’re going to work towards a goal. You need to make your expectations for your people clear, and watch as they confidently reach toward them. If you don’t set clear expectations, don’t be surprised when the people under you are frustrated and unsure of what you want them to do. This feeling of being unsure will hurt their self-confidence rather than inspire it.
You’ll inspire your team to achieve more if you lead them by example. Do you have a target metric you want each team member to hit? Make sure you’re hitting it, too. Do you want to see positive communication between your team and their customers or clients? Model this behavior. The better your example to your team members is, the more confident they will be that they, too, can achieve greatness. Don’t forget to show your team that you are also confident, both in yourself and in them.
If you’re a leader, you’ll inspire more confidence and growth in your team if you celebrate their achievements. Don't just celebrate the big ones, either. Celebrate the small achievements, and watch as the people rise to the occasion and start working for bigger things.
When you acknowledge achievements, see if you can give a reward in addition to the verbal praise, though verbal praise is inspiring even without a reward. An extra afternoon off or a cash bonus in a work setting, for instance, can help inspire additional hard work from your people.
Growth requires the right soil to happen, so give your people that soil by providing opportunities. If you’re seeing talent in one of your people, give them a place to use that talent and grow in their confidence. If you notice someone is having problems with low self-confidence, find an area where you think they can be successful and encourage them to give it their all. When people grow, and you applaud that growth, they become more confident.
Every person on your team needs to be supportive of every other member. Creating a supportive environment and a culture where team members help one another and avoid being overly critical of others. A supportive environment also makes room for mistakes because mistakes are where growth and learning take place. They can also be where confidence is destroyed if not handled with respect and support.
You’re the leader, so you need to be in place when you say you will be. Reliability will build a culture of support and confidence. Consistency is also important. Consistency in rewarding your team members, supporting them, and helping to grow your entire organization will all go far in inspiring confidence.
People aren’t fully confident until they’re ready to be independent. You can encourage them to take a step toward independence, which, in turn, will inspire greater confidence.
Verbally express your confidence that the people under you and around you will be able to achieve their goals. Hearing this verbal affirmation will go far in inspiring confidence in the people around you.
Finally, emphasize working together as a team. Collaboration can often lead to greater outcomes, and better outcomes encourage people to feel more confident. In collaboration, you’ll also help build that supportive environment, which also helps with confidence.
